It is with greatest sadness and shock that we have to inform you of the passing of
Maestro David Stahl
Music director of the Charleston Symphony for 25 years and general music director of the Gärtnerplatz Theatre in Munich since 1999. His brilliant performances of the leading operatic repertoire will remain unforgotten to Munich audiences. He conducted his very last concert in Munich - a spectacular Summer Open Air concert on July 25 with nearly 10 000 people watching in the streets. During this time his wife Karen, 52, was already very ill and David went back to Charleston without ever returning to Munich again. Doctors discovered lymphoma on him, shortly after which his wife died in September. This month his own fatal disease took on a dramatic turn even though he was strongly determined to fight against it and get well in order to be there for their children Anna (16) and Byron (20) and to return to conducting again at the opera.
The much loved and charismatic conductor died Sunday October 24, 2010 ten days before his 61st birthday. In December he was to conduct the new production of “Fidelio” at the newly opened Teatro de las Bellas Artes in Mexico City. He was so much looking forward to that… Our thoughts are with Karen and David's beloved children.

Ciao David!
